Paget's Disease of Bone Paget's disease of bone is a common disorder of the elderly, and is characterised by marked increases in bone resorption and bone formation. The consequence is disordered bone architecture. Although the aetiology is still unclear, it seems likely that the disease is related to a viral infection involving a virus in the measles family related to the parainfluenza viruses. In England, some researchers have linked Paget's disease to dog ownership and implicated canine distemper virus. The pathophysiology of Paget's disease, however, may also involve abnormal production of cytokines in the bone cell environment.
